Arts and Crafts Gardens
Arts and Crafts gardens grew out of the English contempt for the Victorian philosophies of grandeur, geometric plantings of annuals, winding paths and exotic plant oddities. Instead, the Arts and Crafts style drew nostalgic ideals from earlier times, the Medieval times and Renaissance. ,This style incorporated the use of handcrafted décor, such as benches, pergolas, trellises, topiaries, and other pottery into the landscape. It was characterized by having long straight lined walks and enclosed garden compartments also known as outdoor rooms. Brick walls, trellises, and shrubs, hedges, terraces, and sunken gardens separated the compartmentalized gardens. The plantings were in masses and trailed along walls as well as out of cracks inn walls, over walkways.,The Bungalow style of architecture, associated with this type of garden, is characterized by the long over hanging eves and gables as well natural wood and brick building matterials. The most basic design principals of an Arts and Crafts garden are the tying in of the building, be it country cottage or bungalow, into the garden that surrounds it. This can be done by the placement of large shrubs and trees in the eaves of the house as well as vines trailing up the face of the building.
